Why Start Your Sea Base Scuba Training Now?
Sea Base may still feel a long way away. Your family’s calendar probably won’t.
As your departure gets closer, you’ll be balancing Scout activities, school, sports, family vacations and the other requirements for your trip. Scuba training requires both pool and open-water time, so waiting until the last minute can leave you trying to fit training around limited weekends.
Our Open Water classes can book 2–3 months in advance during busy periods.

Your Path to Scuba Certification
1. Learn
Complete your SDI Open Water Scuba Diver and Computer Nitrox online learning on your own schedule.
The academics give you the knowledge behind what you’ll be doing in the water, so your time with your instructor can focus on developing actual diving skills.
2. Build Your Skills
Work with your instructor in our heated, on-site pool in Plano to learn and develop the skills you’ll use as a diver.
Rather than simply checking skills off a list, the goal is to help you understand how to use your equipment, control your buoyancy, solve problems, and become comfortable managing yourself underwater.
3. Build Confidence
After learning the required skills, you’ll have additional time in the water to practice, refine, and put those skills together.
These Confidence Sessions help bridge the gap between learning individual skills and actually using them while diving — giving you more time underwater before your Open Water dives.
4. Complete Your Open Water Dives
Take what you’ve learned into an actual diving environment with your instructor.
Your Open Water dives are where you demonstrate that you can apply your knowledge and skills as a diver — not where you should be trying to learn everything for the first time.
Once you’ve successfully completed the certification requirements, you’ll earn your internationally recognized SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification.

Have a Younger Scout?
Scouts 10–14 years old can earn an SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver certification.
Junior divers have additional supervision requirements, so we structure their training accordingly.
If you’re sending a younger Scout to Sea Base, starting early is especially valuable. It gives them time after certification to continue diving, develop their skills and become more comfortable underwater before the trip.

You don’t have to coordinate everyone’s certification separately.

Certification Doesn't Expire — Skills Still Matter
Your scuba certification does not have an expiration date.
But there’s an important difference between being certified and being ready for a major diving adventure.
That’s another reason we encourage Sea Base participants to complete certification early. Instead of finishing a course immediately before departure, your Scout has an opportunity to dive again, practice what they learned and arrive with greater comfort and confidence underwater.

You may not need another certification course.
If it’s been a while since your Scout has been underwater, we can help them refresh their skills before Sea Base so their first dive back isn’t during the trip they’ve been looking forward to.
